  8. Overview

  10.     The following comprises what little documentation is needed for dButtons, a handy little utility for Macintosh PowerBook Duo owners. dButtons is a new stand-alone control panel that allows Duo owners to alter the behavior of their trackball buttons. As it turns out, the upper and lower buttons for the Duo's built-in trackball are electrically distinct. Additionally, Apple engineers did something very cool in the PowerBooks. They created the Cursor Device Manager, which is essentially an API for doing cool things with input devices.

  12.     Anyway, dButtons will allow you to change from single-click behaviors to one of no click, single click, double click or click lock. These behaviors remain constant between Shut Downs, Restarts, and Sleep sessions.

  15. Getting Started

  17.     Turn on the Macintosh, as described in Apple's Getting Started With Your Macintosh manual.  Insert the dButtons disk in the Macintosh, wait for the window to appear on the desktop. Drag copy the dButtons control panel over the System Folder icon for your Duo. You will be prompted to approve its placement into the Control Panels folder. Click OK, and you're all set. Restart your PowerBook Duo, and the software is installed!

  19.     To get started, open your control panels (located under the Apple menu) and double-click on the dButtons icon (shown below). You can also open the control panel by selecting its icon and choosing Open from the Finder's File menu.

  45.     To close the window, click the close box in the upper left corner of the window or choose Close Window from the File menu.

  48. Using dButtons
  49.  
  50.     Using dButtons is very straightforward. Simply use each of the popup menus to change your button behaviors. Each setting takes effect once the menu is changed.

  52.     Pressing the Reset button causes the button behaviors to revert back to factory settings, i.e. both buttons set to "Single Click." Pressing the "r" key on the keyboard also acts as an equivalent to the Reset button.

  55. Troubleshooting

  57.     The minimum system configuration you will need to successfully run dButtons is a Macintosh PowerBook Duo with 8 MB RAM and Mac OS version 7.5.x or greater. dButtons will not run under Macintosh System 7.0 or earlier.

If you ever get into the silly situation where you have set each button to "no click" there are two options. If the dButtons window is still open and active, press the "r" key, which is the keyboard equivalent of the Reset button. If this isn't an option, Restart your PowerBook Duo with the Shift key held down. This will cause Extensions not to load. Once your PowerBook has booted, navigate to the Preferences folder in the System Folder. Once inside, locate the "dButtons Prefs" file and drag it to the Trash. Restart your PowerBook once more, and everything will be back to normal.

  61.     You can tell what version of dButtons you have while the control panel is open by either looking at the bottom of the main window or by selecting the Convert icon within the Finder and then selecting the Get Infoﾉ menu item (located under the File menu).
